Pluriomics Awarded €3.2M to Advance Cardiovascular Drug Discovery – Reducing Time, Cost, & Late Stage Attrition of Drug Candidates

Pluriomics is a Dutch company that specializes in the “production and industrialization of high-quality, fully functional hiPS cells-derived cardiovascular cell types and on the development and realization of electrophysiology-, biochemistry- and contraction-based assays for predictive safety pharmacology, toxicology testing and efficacy screening.”

In news released today, the company announced that it will receive a €3.2M grant under the Horizon 2020 SME instrument programme to advance cardiovascular drug discovery.

The company also announced last month that it will lead a €2.0 million Eurostars consortium for the development of a novel in vitro organ-on-a-chip heart failure model for drug discovery and development.

In 2006, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were first introduced by Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University in Japan. Yamanaka’s discovery, which earned him the Nobel prize in 2012, enabled the use of human cells in stem cell science, bypassing the use of embryonic stem cells (ESCs). As a result of this advance, one of the most important applications for induced pluripotent stem cells has become their use as predictive technologies to support and streamline drug safety testing. Awards Given to Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) Researchers

Since induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were first produced in 2006 from mouse cells and in 2007 from human cells, research scientists have recognized the wide-ranging potential of the cell type, including the possibility of using them in drug and toxicology screening, disease modeling, and cellular therapy applications ranging from gene correction, to whole tissue regeneration, individualized medicine, and more.

Since the discovery of iPSCs, the commercial sector has also recognized the huge profits that could potentially be generated from the cell type, and the question being explored among the private sector has been how to generate maximal commercial value through the development of iPSC applications and technologies.

Scheduled for June 13, 2016, in Boston, Massachusetts, Axiogenesis is hosting an American symposium titled, “iPSC Derived Cells & Assays Come of Age.” Hosted at the Westin Waterfront, the symposium will explore how experts in the pharmaceutical industry and leading academic institutions are using Axiogenesis’ cells and assays in drug discovery, safety/toxicology screening, and bioengineering. It will also present current approaches to establish and define standards for these cellular models.

ORIG3N Opens Laboratory and Expanded Headquarters to Support World’s Largest Crowdsourced Biorepository of iPSCs

In major news released today, ORIG3N announced that it has opened a new regenerative medicine laboratory and expanded headquarters in Boston.

Founded in 2014, ORIG3N is creating the world’s largest crowdsourced biorepository of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) called LifeCapsule™. It uses these blood cells to produce patient-specific iPSCs to grow different cell types, including heart cells (cardiomyocytes), liver cells (hepatocytes), brain cells (neurons), and more.

In addition to collecting donated blood samples for iPSC production, ORIG3N offers an optional LifeCapsule membership, in which individuals can pay $99/year to get permanent access to their own immortalized iPS cells. ORIG3N also has two other business units, LifeProfile and LifeSystems, which are discussed in detail in the interview below.
