Cynata Therapeutics Initiates Patient Treatment in World 1st Clinical Trial

In breaking news released earlier this month, Cynata Therapeutics (ASX: CYP) announced a major world first. The company treated a patient with steroid resistant acute graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) as part of a phase 1 clinical study of its first mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) product, CYP-001 .

This is an important value catalyst for Cynata and also for the regenerative medicine industry, because it is the first time ever that a patient has been treated with an allogeneic induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived therapeutic mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) product.

Longeveron Begins Enrollment of Second Cohort of Phase 1 Alzheimer’s Disease Trial

MIAMI, May 10, 2017 — Longeveron, a regenerative medicine company, announced that their Phase 1 Alzheimer’s disease trial will proceed with enrollment at the recommendation of an independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) which reviewed data from the trial’s safety run-in phase.

The clinical trial is designed to assess the safety, tolerability and efficacy of intravenous infusion of two different doses of Longeveron mesenchymal stem cells (LMSCs) compared to placebo. The DMC reviewed safety data from a five-patient run-in phase where subjects diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease were given a single infusion of either LMSCs or placebo. Longeveron now has the green light to continue the trial.

Governments on Alert and Stockpiling Antidotes for Nuclear Accidents and Attacks

Many governments, including the U.S. and Japan, are well aware of the dangers to their populations of exposure to high levels of radiation from nuclear accidents or dirty bomb attacks. Whereas Japan’s population was recently exposed at Fukushima following the tsunami of 2011, the U.S. Department of Defense has been stockpiling acute radiation syndrome (ARS) countermeasures as a precaution for many years.

The recent escalation of tensions between North Korea and the U.S. may give the American government cause to up its investment in ARS antidotes. During a military parade on April 15^th, North Korea displayed weapons including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that could be capable of reaching the U.S. ARS may have just become a larger threat to health than it was just a few weeks ago.
