Can Stem Cells Restore Tissue and Memory in the Brain?

Can Stem Cells Restore Tissue and Memory in the Brain? - Dementia Disease

Listen as Dr. Craig Atwood from the UW-Madison Department of Medicine answers the question as to whether stem cells can be used to repair brain damage and treat various diseases of the brain.  The video is below with key points to take away from this amazing concept.

Key Points Include:

  • Stem cells have a remarkable ability to regenerate and reform organ tissues, including those in the brain
  • Stem cell treatments on the human brain have not yet been tested
  • Trials of stem cell injection into the hippocampi of animals have shown to restore memory in transgenic models of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases
  • Stem cells are also being used to regenerate tissue and repair cognitive function in areas of the brain that have been damaged
  • Since sex hormones, which decline with age, have been linked to cognitive performance, stem cell injection can restore the cells that produce these hormones and rebalance the so-called hypophalnic-pituitary-gonadal axis
  • The continued progress of research and the success of animal trials in stem cell therapy for the brain provide major promise for human treatment in the future
