November 24, 2015; HemoGenix, Inc. – The passage by voice vote of H.R. 2820, otherwise known as The Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Reauthorization Act of 2015 through the U.S. House of Representatives  has been lauded by many in the cord blood community, including the Cord Blood Association (CBA) that promoted the bill. There is a good chance the Bill will become law, because health issues usually have bipartisan support. Although patients requiring a cord blood stem cell transplant have been helped by previous Bills, they have nevertheless not benefited from the principle purpose of this Bill, namely to provide high-quality cord blood stem cells for transplantation. Six months ago, we proudly announced our partnership with Save the Cord Foundation in launching an awareness campaign called “Cord Blood Banking Awareness: Educating America and the World.” This campaign aims to educate currently expecting parents, as well as future parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends, about the medical benefits of cord blood preservation. Below is a collection of facts that aid our efforts in spreading awareness.
A biobank is a repository that stores biological samples (usually human) for use in research and medicine. The registration of each sample entering and exiting the system is centrally stored on a computer system that is frequently backed up, and the physical location of each sample is noted to allow efficient location of specimens. Storage of the specimens may range from controlled ambient (room temperature), to +4°C, -20°C, -80°C, and -196°C (liquid or vapor nitrogen, LN2).
Recently released, the “Complete 2015-16 Global Cord Blood Banking Industry Report” explores new clinical trial market data supporting applications for hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from cord blood and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from cord tissue.
