In a recent article, BioInformant compared the top three largest cord blood banks within the United States. The purpose of the analysis was to consider comparative metrics between the largest market leaders in the cord blood industry within the United States, the most mature cord blood market worldwide.
Top International Cord Blood Banks
In this article, we identify three of the best cord blood banks in the world and explore what makes them the market leaders.
In this article, we compare the three of the leading cord blood banks outside of the United States. The metrics used to identify the top international cord blood banks were: 1) Number of cord blood and cord tissue units stored, 2) Number of units released for transplant, 3) Rate of growth, and 4) Geographic reach (regions served), and 5) Brand reputation.
The three companies identified as the market leaders in this international analysis are: FamiCord, CryoHoldco, and China Cord Blood Corporation (CCBC).
1. FamiCord Group, Largest Cord Blood Bank in Europe
Headquartered in Warsaw, Poland, FamiCord Group is the largest cord blood banking network in Europe, with more than 930,000+ cord blood, cord tissue, and perinatal stem cell units stored across its facilities. Founded in 2002, FamiCord has expanded rapidly through mergers and acquisitions, integrating more than 40 companies over the past two decades and establishing a dominant pan-European footprint. Today, the group serves families in over 35 countries and operates a network of laboratories and cryogenic storage facilities positioned strategically across Europe.
FamiCord Group uses modern, automated processing platforms designed to optimize recovery of hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells. Although exact platforms vary across its network of laboratories, FamiCord facilities deploy closed-bag, semi-automated and fully automated processing systems, each validated according to EU standards, AABB guidelines, and national regulatory frameworks. These systems are designed to ensure consistency, sterility, and optimal cell yield across a large, multinational operational structure.
With subsidiaries and partner networks spread across Europe, FamiCord operates under a unified brand but manages multiple accredited laboratories in Poland, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary, and other EU countries. Many of these facilities hold AABB accreditation, FACT accreditation, or ISO certifications, reflecting the group’s commitment to quality and regulatory compliance.
In addition, FamiCord collaborates closely with hospitals and therapeutic programs across Europe, supplying cord blood units for transplantation, clinical trials, and advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) development. The group is one of the few private banks globally involved directly in the manufacturing of cellular therapies under GMP conditions.
Diversified Perinatal and Cellular Biobanking Services
Like several leading international operators, FamiCord has expanded beyond traditional cord blood banking. The company now offers a broad suite of perinatal tissue and adult cell storage services, including:
-
Hematopoietic stem cells from umbilical cord blood
-
Mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord tissue
-
Placental tissue storage
-
Amniotic membrane storage
-
Dental pulp stem cell banking
-
Adipose-derived MSC banking (through select subsidiaries)
This diversification aligns with emerging demand for regenerative medicine applications and future ATMP development. FamiCord maintains one of the largest laboratory footprints of any private cord blood bank in Europe, with major hubs including:
Europe: Warsaw & Warsaw-Annopol, Poland (central processing); Madrid, Spain; Geneva, Switzerland; Budapest, Hungary; Lisbon, Portugal; Thessaloniki, Greece
Rest-of-World: Istanbul, Türkiye (through an affiliated partner); Multiple collaborating facilities in the Middle East and Southeast Asia
These laboratories support both family banking and clinical-grade cell manufacturing, enabling FamiCord to serve as a key player in Europe’s regenerative medicine ecosystem.
2. CryoHoldco, a Market Consolidator in Latin America
CryoHoldco is a stem cell bank holding company that is the market leader in Latin America and one of the largest stem cell banks in the world. CryoHoldco is about five times larger (5X) than any other stem cell bank in Latin America—with more than 125,000 cord blood samples stored. When cord tissue units are also included, it has more than 130,000 stem cell units in inventory.
CryoHoldco was created in 2015 with the purpose of forming the premier stem cell banking company in Latin America. The first asset that was acquired by CryoHoldco was Cryo-Cell Mexico. Cryo-Cell Mexico (CCM) was founded in 2002 by local entrepreneurs in Guadalajara, Mexico, after an investigation of stem cell therapies that was prompted by the illness of a family member.
CCM was the first stem cell bank in Latin America. Since investing in Cryo-Cell Mexico in mid 2015, CryoHoldco has been active in the market and has acquired a controlling interest in a regional stem cell bank in Mexico (Q4 of 2015) and has created a joint venture with a smaller bank that is affiliated and has exclusive access to the leading chain of private hospitals in Mexico (Q1 2016).
Notwithstanding its activity in Mexico, CryoHoldco’s scope and focus is pan-regional. This led it to the acquisition of Stem Medicina Regenerativa, the largest stem cell bank in Colombia, in early 2016.
Today, CryoHoldco represents the largest stem cell banking operation in Latin America, with over 130,000 stored samples, two state-of-the-art lab and storage facilities in Mexico and Colombia, a growing network of 10,000+ affiliated doctors, and over 100 sales offices across our countries and regions of operation. CryoHoldco’s state-of-the-art storage facility in Guadalajara, Mexico, has a capacity of 300,000 samples.
Diversified Stem Cell Banking
Like other leading stem cell banks, CryoHoldco has a diversified revenue stream and product offering, which includes cord blood and cord tissue banking, as well as storage of mesenchymal cells derived from dental pulp. In 2016 the company will also launch adipose tissue storage and a maternity bank.
3. Global Cord Blood Corporation (GCBC), Leading Asia
Headquartered in Hong Kong, Global Cord Blood Corporation (GCBC) — formerly known as China Cord Blood Corporation (CCBC) — is one of the largest and longest‐standing cord blood banking networks in China. Operating under China’s highly regulated “one license per province” policy, GCBC manages both public (donation-based) and private (family) cord blood banking services within its licensed regions.
On March 16, 2018, shareholders approved the change of the company’s name from China Cord Blood Corporation to Global Cord Blood Corporation. The board stated that the new name better reflects its strategic direction toward a broader global presence.
China’s Dual “Public–Private” Model
The Chinese government issues only one cord blood banking license per province, and each licensed operator must run both public (donation-based) and private (family) divisions. Private revenue supports the public bank, as government subsidies are not provided in most cases. This model remains unchanged.
GCBC currently holds exclusive licenses in:
-
Beijing Municipality (licensed 2002)
-
Guangdong Province (licensed 2006)
-
Zhejiang Province (licensed/obtained 2010–2017)
It also holds a minority strategic stake (~24 %) in the cord blood bank in Shandong Province, which adds further coverage. Together these regions represent a large share of China’s annual births, making GCBC the largest provider in the country by population coverage.
GCBC provides the following primary services:
-
Umbilical cord blood collection
-
Laboratory testing and stem cell processing
-
Long-term cryogenic storage for both public and private units
-
Matching services for donated stem cells
The company was originally incorporated in the Cayman Islands and is listed on the NYSE under the ticker “CO.” Its operations in Beijing, Guangdong, and Zhejiang are conducted under China’s national regulatory framework and reflect the company’s large-scale presence across these key regions.
Top Global Cord Blood Banks
As this international comparison illustrates, the global cord blood banking landscape is shaped by a small number of highly scaled, deeply established market leaders. FamiCord in Europe, CryoHoldco in Latin America, and Global Cord Blood Corporation (GCBC) in China each dominate their respective regions through extensive laboratory networks, strong regulatory positioning, and decades of growth fueled by mergers, acquisitions, and expanding therapeutic applications.
While the United States remains the most mature cord blood market in the world, home to major players such as CBR, ViaCord, and Cryo-Cell, the dynamics outside the U.S. reveal a different pattern: broad geographic consolidation, hybrid public-private models, and multinational operational footprints that support both family banking and clinical-grade cell manufacturing.
Taken together, these top international banks represent the core of the global cord blood ecosystem and demonstrate how regional leaders continue to advance stem cell preservation, therapeutic access, and regenerative medicine innovation worldwide.
