China’s First Approved MSC Therapy, Ruibosheng, Hits the Market at a Fraction of Global Pricing

For years, the promise of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has faced a stubborn barrier: cost. Even as regulators in South Korea, Japan, and other countries have cleared MSC-based products for commercial use, pricing for advanced cell therapies has often reached six figures, limiting access to a relatively small segment of patients and healthcare systems.

China’s first approved MSC therapy is challenging that assumption. Ruibosheng (amimestrocel injection), developed by Platinum Life Excellence Biotech, has entered the Chinese market at a price point that is a fraction of comparable cell therapies globally, highlighting how manufacturing innovation and scale may reshape the economics of regenerative medicine.

The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) granted conditional approval to Ruibosheng on January 2, 2025, making it the first MSC-based cell therapy approved for market in China. The therapy was cleared for the treatment of steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) with predominant gastrointestinal involvement in patients aged 14 and older. Since receiving regulatory approval, Ruibosheng has progressed into commercial distribution and clinical adoption across Chinese hospitals.

A Serious, Underserved Complication

Acute graft-versus-host disease arises after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, when immune cells from a donor attack the recipient’s own tissues. When gastrointestinal involvement occurs and standard corticosteroid therapy fails, outcomes can be severe, leaving physicians with limited treatment options.

Ruibosheng is derived from human umbilical cord tissue and is designed to modulate this immune response by leveraging the anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties associated with MSCs. For patients with steroid-refractory aGVHD, the therapy represents a new clinical option for a condition that has historically been difficult to treat.

While Ruibosheng’s clinical approval represents a milestone for China’s cell therapy industry, its pricing has attracted significant attention worldwide.

The Breakthrough: MSC Therapy at a New Price Point

The therapy is reportedly priced at approximately RMB 19,800 (about USD 2,800) per infusion. With a standard treatment course consisting of eight doses, the total cost is approximately RMB 158,000, or roughly USD 22,000. By comparison, similar advanced cell therapies marketed in the United States have carried price tags exceeding USD 190,000, placing Ruibosheng at a small fraction of those costs.

The difference reflects a broader question facing the global cell therapy industry: can manufacturing innovation make regenerative medicine more accessible?

Platinum Life’s approach centers on a 3D microcarrier-based suspension culture system developed in collaboration with researchers at Tsinghua University. Unlike more traditional MSC manufacturing methods that often rely on labor-intensive open culture processes, the company’s platform uses an automated, closed, continuous production approach designed to improve scalability and efficiency.

According to Platinum Life, this manufacturing model reduces contamination risks while lowering material, labor, and production costs associated with large-scale MSC expansion. Those efficiencies appear to be reflected in Ruibosheng’s comparatively low commercial price.

Beyond Approval: Building a Commercial Cell Therapy Platform

Regulatory approval is only the first step in bringing a cell therapy to patients. Commercial success requires the ability to manufacture consistently at scale, maintain strict quality controls, manage cold-chain logistics for living cell products, train clinical teams, and establish hospital adoption pathways.

Whether China’s manufacturing model can be replicated in other markets remains to be seen. However, as additional MSC and broader cell-and-gene-therapy products advance through regulatory pathways, Ruibosheng may become an early example of how manufacturing scale, automation, and cost discipline could influence the future accessibility of advanced therapies worldwide.
