3 Bullet Thursday - Stem Cells (Oct 22, 2015)

Stay alert to the latest and greatest on stem cells.  Enjoy this week’s “3 Bullet Thursday,” a weekly post that we do to update you on interesting and important events within the world of stem cells.

1. RoosterBio has released the world’s first ever ready-to-print (RTP) stem cell product, “thaw and use” human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). This advance will make standardized cells accessible for rapid 3D bioprinting and tissue engineering. Totally incredible.

2. Scientists from Egypt’s Mansoura Medical School have successfully reversed infertility from cancer by directly injecting stem cells into the ovaries.

3. Will we eventually grow replacements organs using our own stem cells? It’s possible, as two research teams released news of growing kidney structures from stem cells within the past month.

First, an American team lead by Dr. Ryuji Morizane published findings in Nature Biotechnology that they had converted induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into kidney structures that resemble those from a normal human kidney.

Second, a team of Australian researchers lead by Dr. Minoru Takasato successfully grew nephron organoids from iPSCs, releasing their results in Nature.

It’s been quite a week. Happy Thursday!
