Global Rates of Cord Blood Banking Storage on a Public and Private Basis
Globally, both public and private cord blood storage vary substantially by regions, because there are areas in China where the storage rates are above 10%, as well as a number of regions worldwide where cord blood storage is practically non-existent (rates under 0.05%).
Accounting for the relative prevalence of these regions, it is clear that cord blood banking storage rates are at less than 1% on a global basis.

There are now approximately 4.3 million units stored in private cord blood banks worldwide. This data is current as of January 2016 (Source: BioInformant Worldwide, LLC). Finally, BioInformant estimates that 0.1% of parents publicly store cord blood on a global basis. Again, this is an average and varies greatly from region-to-region.
Note that the relative ratio of public-to-private banking is slightly higher globally than it is within the United States. Meaning, the statistic that there are about 5 cord blood units privately stored for every cord blood unit that is publicly donated is only true within the United States.
