What Percentage of Parents Publicly and Privately Store Cord Blood on a Worldwide Basis

In a prior article, BioInformant shared the following information about domestic rates of public and private cord blood storage within the United States. This article identified that U.S. parents now privately store cord blood for approximately 2.6% of births (102,000 / 3,945,000 births = 2.6%).

If publicly donated cord blood is included too, then approximately 3% of U.S. parents now store cord blood at birth, because there are about 5 cord blood units privately stored for every cord blood unit that is publicly donated.

In this article, let’s consider cord blood banking data on a global basis.

Global Rates of Cord Blood Banking Storage on a Public and Private Basis

Globally, both public and private cord blood storage vary substantially by regions, because there are areas in China where the storage rates are above 10%, as well as a number of regions worldwide where cord blood storage is practically non-existent (rates under 0.05%).

Accounting for the relative prevalence of these regions, it is clear that cord blood banking storage rates are at less than 1% on a global basis.

Here is the more detailed information:

There are now approximately 4.3 million units stored in private cord blood banks worldwide. This data is current as of January 2016 (Source: BioInformant Worldwide, LLC). BioInformant has a full decade of historical information on the cord blood banking market, beacuse we have tracked the market from 2006 to present. This makes us well-positioned to execute this analysis.

There are also 135 million births per year worldwide (Source: World Health Organization)

Therefore, approximately 0.25%  (a quarter of one percent) of parents privately store cord blood on a global basis (Source: BioInformant Worldwide, LLC).

(135,000,000 births per year) X 0.25% store privately = 337,500 new cord blood and tissue units stored privately each year

Finally, BioInformant estimates that 0.1% of parents publicly store cord blood on a global basis. Again, this is an average and varies greatly from region-to-region.

Note that the relative ratio of public-to-private banking is slightly higher globally than it is within the United States. Meaning, the statistic that there are about 5 cord blood units privately stored for every cord blood unit that is publicly donated is only true within the United States.
