CDI and National Eye Institute to Collaborate on iPSC-Derived Cell Therapies for Retinal Degenerative Disease

Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, Cellular Dynamics International (CDI) is powerhouse within the induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) industry. The company was founded in 2004 and listed on NASDAQ stock exchange in July 2013.  Today, the company has more than than 150 employees, as well as an extremely robust patent portfolio of more than 800 stem cell related patents of which approximately 130 pertain to iPSCs.

In major news released this week, CDI announced that it has partnered with the National Eye Institute to develop cell transplantation therapies for retinal degenerative disease. The approach will use iPSC-derived retinal pigment epithelium, as well as a biodegradable scaffold on which the cells could grow.

The timing of this news is interesting, as the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (CDB) announced earlier this month that it will be resuming the world’s first clinical study involving the use of iPSC-derived cells in humans. The first transplant of iPSC cells into humans occurred in 2014 when iPSC-derived retinal pigment epithelium cells were implanted into a patient with age-related macular degeneration in Japan. While the study was later put on hold due to safety concerns, RIKEN has since announced that it will be resuming this trial with the approach this time involving allogeneic iPSC-derived cells.

On a global scale, it appears that increasing attention is being given to cellular therapies involving iPSC-derived cell types.

Cellular Dynamics and the National Eye Institute Establish a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to Advance Cell Transplantation Therapy for the Treatment of Retinal Degenerative Disease using iPSC-Derived Cells

MADISON, WIS., June 22, 2016Cellular Dynamics International, Inc. (CDI), a FUJIFILM company, today announced that it has entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the National Eye Institute (NEI), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to conduct research to advance a cell transplantation therapy for the treatment of retinal degenerative disease using retinal pigment epithelium derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC-RPE). The collaboration includes the joint development of an optimized biocompatible biodegradable scaffold that is likely to be a critical component for a potential future therapy.

Kaz Hirao, CDI Chairman and CEO, said, “While iPSC-derived cells have great potential for regenerative medicine applications, there are many hurdles yet to overcome. This agreement builds on the longstanding relationship between CDI and the National Eye Institute to address some of these hurdles, and may lead to iPSC-based therapies for patients with serious diseases of the eye.”

Sheldon Miller, Ph.D., Scientific Director at the NEI, said, “This is a multifaceted, collaborative effort with CDI to develop a therapeutic intervention against retinal degenerative disease. We are looking forward with great interest to the results of this commitment.”
