It is critical for cord blood banks to understand the needs and expectations of their prospective clients. For this purpose, an electronic survey was distributed to recent and expectant parents in the United States. The survey link was distributed in Facebook groups related to pregnancy and early-child parenthood during September and October 2017, collecting a total of 111 responses.

These findings can now be accessed and implemented into your cord blood bank, without the time and expense of distributing your own survey.

Survey details are shown below:

  • Description of Survey Population: Recent and expectant parents
  • Geography: United States
  • Number of Respondents: 111
  • Dates: Electronically distributed during September and October 2017
  • Distribution: The survey link was distributed in Facebook groups related to pregnancy and early-child parenthood.
  • Type: Electronic; Responses collected using SurveyMonkey software
  • Goal: To determine the factors involved in a U.S. parent’s decision to privately store, publicly donate, or discard a newborn’s cord blood
  • Branched Survey Design: All respondents answered the first 12 questions. Only respondents who responded that they had publicly or privately stored cord blood were then asked to respond to questions 13 through 17, an additional five questions.

The primary focus of the survey was to determine the factors involved in an expectant parent’s decision to privately store, publicly donate, or discard a newborn’s cord blood.

For this reason, questions that were asked within this survey were designed explore the internal (personal) and external (environmental) factors that influence this decision.

Importantly, this survey is the first time in 10 years that BioInformant has seen a substantial increase in rates of cord blood banking awareness.

Questions in this survey include:

  1. What is your gender?
  2. What is the highest level of school you have completed?
  3. Which category best describes your household income?
  4. What is the age of your most recent child?
  5. How familiar are you with private cord blood banking? How familiar are you with public cord blood donation?
  6. On a scale of 1 (know nothing) to 10 (know everything), how would you rank your understanding of cord blood banking?
  7. Have you ever heard about the following: Cord blood banking, cord tissue banking, placental banking, dental stem cell banking, amniotic banking, other?
  8. Have you ever done online research about cord blood banking?
