As a publisher of stem cell news, we haven’t traditionally wandered into the world of claims abut stem cell beauty products and cosmetic procedures. For obvious reasons, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the claims made by these companies.

However, we get approached daily with questions about this topic and know that people are seeking information about it from a source that doesn’t inflate the claims understands the science. For this reason, we describe below potential uses of stem cells within cosmetic procedures.

How Cosmetic Stem Cells Differ from Medical Stem Cells in Terms of Procedures

While stem cell research is still in its early stages, stem cells are increasingly being incorporated into both cosmetic and medical applications. In both types of procedures, physicians extract fat through a liposuction procedure, because fat tissue is rich in stem cells.  The fat is then processed to separate the stem cells from the adipose (fat) cells.

The two procedures differ in the uses after the stem cells are harvested. In medical procedures, stem cells are injected as treatments (in joints, for example) or given intravenously (IV). However, in cosmetic procedures, stem cells are used to improve skin health and or augment other anti-aging aspects.

In some situations, stem cells may be sourced from other tissues  than fat, including bone marrow, peripheral blood, dental pulp, or umbilical cord blood or tissue.

Stem Cells for Liposuction Procedures

This stem cell procedure involves stem cells being extracted from fat that has been suctioned. They are injected back into the area where the suction was performed to get favorable results. Although stem cell liposuction is still investigational, there is evidence to suggest that it may:

Stem Cells for Abdominoplasty

One popular cosmetic procedure is abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck. This cosmetic surgery starts by flattening the belly area by eliminating excess fat, which can be performed through liposuction. A surgical procedure is then performed to remove the extra skin. Abdominoplasty also works on tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall, resulting in a more toned, firmer look. Adding stem cells into this procedure may enhance its benefits, by aiding healing and supporting the micro-environment into which they are introduced.

Stem Cells for Natural Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is also a popular cosmetic procedure today. The procedure involves transferring fat from any part of the body to the breasts, primarily to enhance their size and shape. Liposuction can still be utilized as the method for extracting the fat, and the extracted fat is transferred to the breasts. Before the fat is injected into the breasts, stem cells may be added. Potential advantages of adding stem cells to this procedure include:

Stem Cells for Butt Lift

Butt lift shares the same methodology as breast augmentation. Fat is extracted and then transferred to the buttocks. Adding stem cells into the procedure provides the same advantages as with breast augmentation. Commonly, in butt lifts, 70% of fat cells survive in the standard procedure. Adding stem cells to the procedure may boost the the survival rate of the fat cells by an additional 20%, thereby improving the final results and satisfaction of the patient.

Stem Cells for Carbon Dioxide Laser Treatment

This laser treatment involves vaporizing the pores of the skin. When stem cells are added in the method, they are extracted from fat first and then processed. Stem cells don’t have to be injected into the skin because the carbon dioxide treatment enlarges the pores. They are directly placed onto the face, allowing large pores to absorb them. The advantages of adding stem cells in laser treatment include the reduction of the recovery period and improvement in the results of the treatment, allowing smother skin and lessening the appearance of wrinkles.

Stem Cells for Facial Fat Transfer

Fat transfer is considered safe to restore facial volume. The stem cell harvesting and processing is still the same for this cosmetic procedure. Stem cells are added into the fat before it is injected into the face. The advantages of adding stem cells in this method are the same as with breast augmentation—decreased recovery time and enhanced effects.

Stem Cell Face Lift

This is probably the simplest stem cell cosmetic procedure, as the stem cells are injected into the skin to renew tissues of the face. The harvesting of stem cells is the same. But, when stem cells are separated from the fat, they are directly injected into the face. The procedure helps lighten dark spots, improve fine lines, and firm up the skin.

The Future of Stem Cells in Cosmetic Medicine

Although stem cells are promising in cosmetic procedures, it essential to understand they are still considered investigational. There is still more research to conduct to prove that stem cells can be for non-investigational uses too. The unique quality of stem cells is that they do most of the healing in the body. This is why stem cells are gaining much interest in cosmetic medicine, where healing and rejuvenating the body from the inside out is a priority.

Although stem cells may improve results within cosmetic procedures, much research is needed before their safety and efficacy is better understood. For this reason, we recommend that you read the U.S. FDA’s Patient and Consumer Information about regenerative therapies.
